CAR operates a 6,000 square foot model apparel plant that demonstrates more than 2 million in state-of-the-art technology, including design, cutting, stitching, and finishing equipment.  Apparel manufacturers can see firsthand how flexible manufacturing and UPS (Unit Production Systems) work in practice.  They can evaluate the most advanced apparel production equipment on the market as it actually produces garments.  CAR even helps apparel companies appraise technology from an investment standpoint with a software program called AMCIA, (Apparel Manufacturing Capital Investment Advisor).
The model apparel plant currently employs 12 sewing operators that demonstrate new manufacturing equipment as well as innovative manufacturing concepts.  They produce approximately 900-military and commercial shirts per week.  CAR uses this production to learn about the problems associated with manufacturing and supply chain management, to develop better solutions for transfer to commercial manufacturers.
Innovative manufacturing concepts consist of key ingredients of the Theory of Constraints.  Research has shown that successful implementation of these world class manufacturing concepts in an environment of employee empowerment will improve job satisfaction, reduce lead times, reduce non-value-added operations, increase attendance, increase productivity, and reduce turnover.
Current production consist of Marine Corp Drill Sergeant for Paris Island and San Diego, 28 different styles of special measurement dress shirts, for all services, men’s, women’s, long sleeve, short sleeve, and military dress shirts for commercial companies such as the Marine Shop, Super Trooper, and Officers Equipment.  A project area that consists of specialty equipment used to develop prototypes for military purpose and commercial companies.
